Walking Tour Itinerary - 1 week beautiful landscapes, historical towns & gourmet in Tuscany

Day 1 — Val Virginio Valley

The day will start with the group leaving Villa La Cappella by foot in the direction of Montespertoli, where we will turn right toward Lucignano.

We will then walk amongst the vineyards with views looking over the Val Virginio valley, which at the crest is the impressive Poppiano castle.

Once the group descends the hill, they then enter the Vineyard of the Guicciardini family which then brings us up to Poppiano Castle, where we will walk to the village of San Quirico, which the route is covered by some of the most beautiful Cypresses tree in the whole of the province of Florence.

In San Quirico, we will visit the Norcineria Dini, which is a family run producer of the world famous Toscano Ham, Finocchiona Salami & the Tuscany delicacy Pecorino cheese.

After tasting the delights from Norcineria Dini, we will stop in an authentic café for some Cappuccino’s and coffees before heading in the direction of San Casciano Val di Pesa.

Our gentle onward walk then takes us through some ancient villages, where we will see some local Villa and after 3 kilometres we then reach the hamlet of Ponterotto, when we will follow the river Pesa to the Botte park where the Villa la Cappella team will have a prepared picnic lunch set out for the group.

After Lunch, we will then be transferred back to Villa La Cappella hotel via car, where the group will have some free team to relax.

Day 2 — San Gimignano to Certaldo

Location: Linear walk from San Gimignano to Certaldo
Distance: 14 Kilometres (Duration: 4-5 hours)

The group will be transferred by car to the UNESCO’s world cultural heritage town of San Gimignano.

When we arrive we will have a short break for a Cappuccino on the beautiful Piazza della Cisterna, which is surrounded by wonderful medieval towers and buildings.

We will then all visit the famous “The College” Church, who fresco painting date back to around 1148AD and are some of the most beautiful in the whole of Italy.

When we leave San Gimignano we will take the road toward Volterra, and after 2 kilometres, we will then start walking on the Via Francigena road, which is the route that the pilgrims used when coming from northern Italy to Roma in 500AD. Along the route we will stop at the sanctuary of Pancole convent, where in 1668 the Virgin Mary appeared to the Pilgrims.

We will follow the road to Val D'Elsa until we reach the city of Certaldo, which in the middle ages was a very important trading centre and its military importance. In Certaldo, we will stop for a picnic lunch, which will have been prepared by the Villa La cappella team.

After Lunch, we will then been transferred back to Villa La Cappella hotel via car, where the group will have some free team to relax.

As an option within your free time, everyone from the group are welcome to come and sit by the log fire in the hotel lounge, enjoy a cappuccino or a glass of wine, as we will be all enjoying teaching everyone to speak some basic Italian.

Day 3 — Virgignolo Valley

The group will leave the Villa La Cappella by foot and turn left and walk the route towards Lucardo, where we will visit the village of Lucardo, which was once an important and strategic castle from the Lombard origins. From here you can admire the panoramic views of northern and western Tuscany.

We will then continue our journey up the valley of the Virgignolo, where we will visit the sanctuary of Padre Pio where we can rest and enjoy a cappuccino at an authentic Italian cafe.

Our path then continues until we reach the Il Corno castle, where we will enjoy this amazing building and then get to explore the winery within the grounds.

During our picnic lunch we will also enjoy some wine tasting and some olive oil tasting.

After lunch we will visit the Romanesque church of San Pancrazio and then return to Villa La Cappella by car.

Day 4 — City of Florence

We depart from Montespertoli to Florence via bus which departs at 9.30am and arrives at 10.15am in the Centre of Florence.

We will have a cappuccino in Piazza della Signoria, which is in front of Palazzo Vecchio.

Our journey will embark on the rich history of Renaissance art as we will be visiting the world famous Uffizi Gallery, which is located in the heart of Florence, the Uffizi Gallery hosts works of art by great Italian artists such as Botticelli, Giotto, Cimabue, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raffaello, just to name a few of the most famous.

Once we have left the Uffizi gallery, we will visit Ponte Vecchio and the Palazzo Pitti and for the rest of the morning/early afternoon, the group has the choice to either take a guide walk to the top of the city to enjoy to Piazzale Michelangelo and the Church of San Minato, which commands stunning views across the city of Florence, or the group can have some free time to explore the city by yourself.

We will have a late lunch in just outside Florence at a place called Arcetri, where we will have a stunning sitting down Lunch at the world famous Omero restaurant, where we will have some of there best table reservered with amazing views looking over Florence.

Our tour then continues by returning to the Centre of Florence where we will cross the Arno river, and then visit the splendid white marble church of Santa Croce.

We then continue to Piazza Duomo, where we will visit the Baptistery with its beautiful doors made by Lorenzo Ghiberti and Andrea Pisano, where we will take a short ice cream break before we reach the bus station for the 5.35pm bus back to Villa La Cappella where we will arrive at 7.00pm.

Day 5 — City of Lucca

We will all transfer by car from Villa La Cappella to Empoli train station where we will catch the 9.00am train to Lucca, which will arrive at 10.20am.

The city tour begins with a beautiful walk over the mighty walls of the city of Lucca, which was built in 1565 to defend the city.

The wall walking tour takes around one hour, after which we will then walk into the Centre of the city to visit the famous Piazza Anfiteatro, which was once a Roman amphitheatre. After which we will then visit the nearby San Frediano church with its golden mosaic façade.

Once we leave the San Frediano church, we will head to Via Finlungo, which has a variety of nice old shops.

After a short break for some refreshments at the historical Café Sino, we will then reach Piazza San Michele and the house of Giacomo Puccini, which is one of the best places in the whole of Lucca and is a must stop when visiting the city as this is where the famous composer constructed some of his most well known operas such as Madama Butterfly, Tourandot, and many more.

We will be hosted for Lunch one of the most fantastic restaurants in the whole of Lucca called Giulio in Pellicceria, which will offer us a traditional Tuscany cooking in amazing surroundings.

After lunch the tour continues towards the magnificent dome in the centre of the city and inside the black wooden cross beams grace the ceilings and stunning the visitors.

We will then head to the train station where we will catch the 4.30pm train back to Empoli train station and we will then be transferred by car to Villa La Cappella where we will arrive at around 6.00pm.

Day 6 — Elsa & Montalbino Valleys

We depart from the hotel Villa La Cappella on foot where we will immerse ourselves in the path of the Villa of Aliano, which is amongst some of the most amazing landscapes in the whole of Tuscany.

After a gentle 2 kilometre walk we will reach the church of San Pietro in Mercato, on the outskirts of Montespertoli, where we will visit the museum of religious art.

Our path will then continue towards the bottom of the Montalbino Valley where we will walk for another 2 kilometres until we reach the village of Montalbino, which is a true jewel overlooking the Elsa Valley.

After a short walk around the village of Montalbino, we will stop for a pre-prepared picnic lunch.

The group will then head across the countryside and wide through the valley along a different route from where we came and we will all arrive at Hotel Villa La Cappella in the early afternoon, where the group can have some free time.

As an option within your free time, everyone from the group are welcome to come and sit by the log fire in the hotel lounge, enjoy a cappuccino or a glass of wine, as we will be all enjoying teaching everyone to speak some basic Italian.

Day 7 — Rest day at Villa La Cappella

This day will generally be a rest day where the people in the group can choice what they would like to do by themselves.

This could range from an organised Hot Air Balloon Flight with Villa La Cappella's own hot air balloon, or some shopping in the local markets, to rest in the garden

of the hotel to an organised walk of the City of Siena (Subject to a minimum of 6 people being involved).

As an option within your free time, everyone from the group is welcome to come and sit by the log fire in the hotel lounge, enjoy a cappuccino or a glass of wine, as we will be all enjoying teaching everyone to speak some basic Italian.

Day 8 — Departure day

We will meet in the lobby at around 9.30am where the group can check out and discuss their transfer times and options with the Villa La Cappella team.
